A baker in Adelaide, Australia, recently found themselves at the center of a social media storm after creating a custom “cocaine cake.” Skye Baillie, the 36-year-old dessert expert was faced with a unique request from a customer who wanted a birthday cake featuring white lines resembling the illicit substance, accompanied by credit cards. The decision to fulfill this request led to a mix of reactions, with some celebrating the creativity and others expressing concern over the message it sends, particularly to younger audiences.
The controversial cake, measuring 12” x 16” and costing AUD 250 (approx $167), was commissioned by the mother of a birthday boy. The unique creation featured intricate details, including white lines made of icing sugar, a parcel, a bank card, and fondant $50 bills. Emblazoned with the words “Happy 30th birthday Blake,” the cake was designed to mimic the illegal substance at the customer’s request.
Initially hesitant when presented with the inquiry, Baillie admitted that she “screwed her nose up” at the idea. However, she eventually decided to create the custom cake, emphasizing her role as a baker without judgment, she defended her decision on social platforms, stating, “I just make the cakes, I don’t ask questions.” Once shared on Facebook the extraordinarily detailed cake quickly garnered attention, amassing 183k reactions, including 20k shares in just a few days.
Social media users were divided in their responses, with some praising the creativity and humor in the design while others expressed criticism, particularly concerning children’s perceptions of drugs. A few commenters questioned the wisdom of accepting such a request, suggesting that it goes beyond the boundaries of acceptable content for a celebratory dessert. However, supporters of Baillie lauded her for fulfilling a personalized order without prejudice and ensuring the satisfaction of the client.
Skye’s passion for cake decorating transformed into the successful home-based business, Skysies Cakes, established in 2009. A self-taught artist, she turned her love for art and craft into a business after initially creating cakes for family and friends.
