A 42-year-old hailing from Toronto, Ben Pobjoy has successfully concluded an expedition shattering the Guinness World Record for the most marathons completed in one year. Under the banner of his “Marathon Earth Challenge,” he embarked on a whirlwind journey that spanned nearly 70 countries in 2023, achieving the extraordinary feat of completing 242 freestyle marathons. This impressive endeavor covered a staggering distance of 11,465 kilometers (further than the circumference of the moon).

Pobjoy’s ambitious project commenced on January 1, 2023, marked by a decision to resign from his job and liquidate his possessions, setting off on a twelve-month journey around the world. His goal was not just to break the existing record but to redefine the notion of a marathon. Using a freestyle approach, Pobjoy ran each marathon with no set course without official finish lines, adding complexity to the endeavor.

His adventure took him through diverse climates and terrains, from subzero temperatures in Ulaanbaatar to extreme humidity in Malta. Carrying only his cameras and essentials in his backpack, he documented his journey through photography with experiences ranging from being robbed by police in Mexico, to narrowly avoiding slipping off a cliff in Sint Maarten!

Yet Pobjoy’s journey was more than just a physical accomplishment, it was also a decade-long commitment to personal transformation. He started this journey almost ten years ago while facing health issues, finding solace in outdoor exploration, eventually evolving into a profound passion for walking, eventually becoming the inspiration for his Marathon Earth Challenge.

Describing the world as his muse, Pobjoy revealed how he adopted fast-walking in his 30s to lose weight. The post-pandemic world offered an opportunity to travel, and he seized it. Support from his loved ones, a daily phone call, and regular flights home proved invaluable on his travels.

The meticulously planned route took him through South America, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and Asia, uncovering memorable moments in bucket-list destinations like the Galapagos and India. Pobjoy has submitted his paperwork to the Guinness World Records and now eagerly awaits their decision.
