Nigerian Wigmaker Breaks World Record By a Hair with 1,152-Foot Handmade Wig

In a interesting display of creativity and dedication, Helen Williams, a seasoned professional wigmaker hailing from Lagos, Nigeria, has etched her name in the Guinness World Records by weaving a handmade wig that stretches an astonishing 1,152 feet, 5 inches — longer than seven Olympic swimming pools.
The record-breaking endeavor took Williams over 11 days and an investment of more than two million naira (approximately $2,500). Williams, who has been crafting wigs for eight years, utilized her expertise to overcome the challenges of finding materials suitable for such an extensive project.
The construction process involved the meticulous creation of an underlay using wig-cap netting and black fabric fixed to a bicycle helmet. Williams then weaved together 1,000 bundles of hair, employing 12 cans of hair spray, 35 tubes of hair glue, and securing it all with a staggering 6,250 hair clips.
Reflecting on the arduous journey, Williams expressed, “At some point, I felt exhausted. However, friends and family encouraged me. I did not want to let them down, so I maintained my focus. The outcome is the longest handmade wig in the world.”
Measuring the colossal wig presented its own set of challenges due to its size. Eventually, Williams found a suitable location along the highway between Lagos and the city of Abeokuta for the official measurement.
The record-setting wig now resides in Williams’s office, where it is available for admiration by all. Speaking about her achievement, Williams offered words of encouragement, stating, “My advice to everyone out there is: dreams are attainable. However, the journey is a very rough one.”
