Elizabeth Allen, an elementary school teacher from Greenville, has secured her place in the Guinness World Records by diligently folding thousands of Starburst candy wrappers into the world’s longest candy wrapper chain. What started as a moment of restlessness during a college class 4 years ago, evolved into a project that earned her a place in history.

Her journey into the world of candy wrapper chains began in her sophomore year at Furman University in 2017. It all started during a class taught by Dr. Judy Stuart, an associate professor of education, who would provide candy to her students. Allen, known for her penchant for keeping busy hands, initially made paper airplanes from Starburst wrappers. However, a suggestion from a friend led her to explore the possibility of creating a chain.

As the project gained momentum, she became the go-to person for Starburst wrappers. Fellow students, friends, and even campers from the university’s music camps contributed to her growing collection. After college, the chain-building process became collaborative, with her third-grade elementary students carefully preserving wrappers to help Allen achieve her goal.

As GWR encouraged participants to associate their attempts with a cause, Allen highlighted glass recycling. Facing a challenge in the community when glass recycling ceased, she aimed to draw attention to the issue and advocate for its continuation. Her candy wrapper chain became a tangible representation of recycling potential, displaying how seemingly disposable items could be transformed into something remarkable.

Her journey to the world record was not without its challenges, as she faced logistical issues as the chain grew, realizing that it couldn’t support its weight beyond 500 wrappers. Undeterred, she devised a solution by transporting the chain in a large plastic container, ensuring its safety. Her dedication paid off, and in the summer of 2021, Allen completed the chain at an impressive length of 195 feet, comprising exactly 10,000 wrappers.

The official recognition from Guinness World Records arrived in the spring of 2022, validating Allen’s dedication and creativity. Despite the chain’s fragility, it now resides in her classroom as a teaching tool, inspiring her students to set and accomplish goals no matter how unconventional they may seem. Her students have actually expressed interest in surpassing her record as she encourages them to embrace aspirations and turn them into reality.
